Professor Kartar Singh Visits Anad Conservatory Site

01 Friday Feb 2013

While driving towards Sultanpur Lodhi, I saw Professor Kartar Singh on the highway waiting for a bus just past town Khmano on Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway. I had to make an abrupt stop and reverse the old lady Innova in order to block the bus which was about to be driven away. I got him off the bus for he had already climbed inside and was looking for a place to sit. I was half worried with an eye on my vehicle to make sure nobody ran away with it, as we see sometimes in the movies – motor vehicles of all kinds being ripped off leaking folks.

We were soon belted and rolling at 75mph. Instead of Ludhiana, at about 4:40 PM, seated inside the Qila, Sultanpur Lodhi – the site of the Anad Conservatory, I was interviewing him with some of the local press reporters also joining in. During the conversation, while telling him that I do not know what this ‘light music’ actually means, I demonstrated a composition in a ‘small’ rhythmic cycle, which was mostly centered magically on one note only. Since, I understood the value of this composition, singing hadn’t been the same. One can have an extraordinary composition but singing less than extraordinarily or singing an ordinary composition extraordinarily..!
He is a fine man and one of the finest contemporary composers in India. Already a recipient of the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama (Sangeet Natak Akademi)’s Akademi award (2008), he, alongside Bhai Sahib Bhai Gurcharan Singh and Maharaj Baba Jagjit Singh Ji, was made the Tagore Fellow of the Akademi.

As usual, the huge parrots provided background songs. Here are some images taken by Jatinder Singh Bhamra using my little Leica:

On Saturday, January 26, 2013, Kamaycha expponent and son of Padma Shree Sakar Khan Manganiar, Ghever Khan and his younger brother came calling from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. They had already booked their train tickets to join us for Kirtan in honour of my mother, Bibi Surjit Kaur (d.2012), which was scheduled on the day. The programme had to be postponed for various logistical reasons. Both the brothers played at the ongoing Jaipur Literary Festival and came straight. Soon it was sublime music by the two extremely talented brothers. Luigi Hari Tehel Singh played some Rababa at the beginning and I played some Jori and even sang some after before we set of to meet with my granduncle, Bhai Gurcharan Singh. Here are some photos by Gurliv Singh:

Luigi was asked to play some, which he did…

DSC_5948 Edit

As he had not played the Rabab for nearly three weeks, his hands were rusty – no wonder the saying, ‘you go away from the instrument for a day, it goes a hundred away from you !” His Rabab has new gut-strings and to whom he is yet to be fully acquainted but he did a fine job of it, overall.

Feroze Khans’ playing the Dholak so well reminded me of Ma…!

The old boy even got to play some…

Both Ghevar Khan (Kamaycha) and Feroze Khan (Dholak) were very emotional upon meeting Bhai Gurcharan Singh.

DSC_6316 Edit

Bhai Gurcharan Singh especially enjoyed ragas Maru, Sorath and Asa and praised both Feroze and Ghevar for their “sureela (tuneful), tala wich (rhythmically sound) and bikhDa (complex)” singing as he put it.

DSC_6317 Edit

Feroze Khan is one of the finest dholak players in Rajasthan and a very talented singer.

It was such an honour meeting him after Ma’s cremation day – I will always be grateful to him for his prayers for her..!
Being with him is like being a toddler yet again in one’s mothers’ lap or, as an awed trekker on a massive mountain range..!

Reflecting, a teacher once said to me,
“Son, the dark in the night
will darken yet,
and darken still after,
then,
there shall be dawn…!”

In awe of whom…
The one who

—taught me about
wonderment

the art of seeking

Gut-String Maker Mimmo Peruffo of Vicenza

29 Friday Jun 2012

Years ago, when I was introduced to Mimmo, his story was chillingly similar to mine. As I had made a major transition from what I actually wanted to do this life time so sickeningly attracted to the flying machines to instead become a student and eventually a custodian of the gurus’ traditions, he was an engineer who got smitten by the art of making gut strings. Our similarities did not begin or end there – as I was meeting the last luthier (instrument maker), the last percussion maestro, the last people with the memory of the songs of the gurus – he was met with the last living exponent of gut string making in Napoli. He has recipes of how they transformed dead animals guts to live and vibrant tannd (gut-string), on beautifully handcrafted and shaped musical instruments, from the 12th century, the medieval and modern eras. The masters throughout were such romantics! The sixth string on the rabab is a master stroke by Mimmo – what would I be without my friends so endearing and precious!
In order to specify the strings of the rabab I have made for Harbhajan Kaur Khalsa of Millis, MA I visited Mimmo’s factory the day before (and yes, I missed the boring Portugallo-Spagna semi-finale) on June 27, 2012. I also met with master classical guitarist Andrea Ferigo of the Conservatorio Di Vicenza who also holds a Diploma in Sitar and also plays the instrument Sarod. Here are some images post-produced by Manpreet Singh:

Admiring the scroll – “Bravo Baldeep..!”
Measuring the strings that I dressed the Rabab with in Delhi.
Feeling the tautness.

Early processing stage.
Mid-way through the process.
Rinsing and checking.

These are like his babies – such passion he possess.
Close monitoring – remarkable it was when he said that there is one chemical (I will not reveal 😉 that he exposes the strings for exact 3 minutes..!
Careful rinsing – he estimated that he will have to return back at 01:00am in the night to start the next stage…

Spun and drying.
Imagine the myriad instruments that these will adorn..!
Maintaining the right humidity is one of the keys.

A point…
…and two.
Phew – we had made it just in time for me to catch the train…

A photo by Fabrizio.
Master guitarist Andrea Ferigo with the Rabab after driving me to the Verona Station.
I was missing the belt that Guru Arjan Dev’s instrument had – but of course, I have already drawn one in my head 🙂

The Rababa is sounding fantastic (kite nazar na lagg jae 😉 may it not attract an evil eye!) and will hopefully fly comfortably to be with her rightful owner on July 1, 2012.

Blacksmith Tirlochan Singh Of Doraha

31 Thursday May 2012

On May 29, 2012, on my way back from a meeting at Punjabi University, Patiala, I stopped by to meet blacksmith Sardar Tirlochan Singh of Doraha. His name had been recommended by one of my tabla students, Hansbir Singh and a pakhawaj/dholak student, Amrik Singh who have recently settled at my residence in Delhi to pursue their studies. Tirlochan Singh makes chimta-s for the kirtankar-s of the Nanaksar Samprada (tradition) which are relatively heavier than the chimte that are available off the shelf. Although I found his workmanship little crude but he is a fine chap. He eventually placed and refused to accept money for the chimta, minus the shakers, that I chose. I have invited him to visit the Anad Conservatory site at Qila, Sultanpur Lodhi where I want to develop a series of high quality chimte.

My crazy interns, two wild kids from Vasant Valley School – Himmat and Anmol, drank more than 8 glasses of juices, rejecting half of them (and they haven’t fallen sick) while I engaged in a conversation with Tirlochan Singh. I suspect that the glass of juice they sent for me was the one they had rejected 😉 Here are a few images from the visit to the workshop of Tirlochan Singh, a blacksmith.
